Supporting players to achieve their potential is why I first got into coaching but, for over a decade, I have been fortunate enough to help coaches to excel. Working for The FA, I have delivered Level 1, 2 and UEFA B courses to hundreds of learners across Lincolnshire and it is in this role that I have repeatedly met volunteers from Lincoln United FC. I have always been impressed with the values they have articulated and the ethos of the club as it has developed. I was particularly impressed with the background structure and the hard work that many of the fans will never see. I’m a firm believer that good people make good things happen and this club appears to be swelling with them.
My first contact with First Team Manager Chris Funnell came when he was a 16-year-old breaking through into Nettleham FC’s first team. Much like then, I still see him being a key person in pushing for success and I want to support him to be able to do that by strengthening the supply of quality, well-rounded, players available to our first team. For some, this will be about developing technical and tactical knowledge, for others it will be more about developing psychological attributes.
I have been impressed by the existing ambition within the Development Team and I look forward to supporting Isaac and Chloe to further their own development. The players can expect to see a positive learning environment from us. As a collective, we will understand our faults, we won’t fear failure but instead we will embrace every opportunity to learn, grow and develop together. I am confident that all members of the group will improve throughout the season and will be better placed to make the step up when their opportunity arises. Winning will be important to us but our true successes won’t be measurable within short term periods: player development is a long process and I look forward to playing my part in helping everyone move forwards.
