The third win in a row is a superb result especially to be born out of a tight game. We are delighted to see that the pictures and the patterns we have worked on in training are being embedded into the match day performance and our playing identity is being defined in a positive way. I have talked previously about how important it is that the players apply themselves and the learning they have received. This is now starting to happen regularly and the lads are adjusting to the demands being made of them.
Our 3-2 victory against Cleethorpes had another debut with our second under 17 coming into the group. Having impressed at training, these lads are taking on the guidance and coaching given and show incredible bravery to be fearless enough to try it in a new environment. The club’s production line is working well with multiple U18s and U17s now firmly in and around the Development squad. This also presents new challenges to established players as they begin to practice what it means to be a senior player in the squad. This is a learnt skill too. It is very easy for them to ignore their new responsibilities but with a few prompts from the coaching team, they soon remember how they felt stepping up into adult football for the first time. We have been particularly impressed with the lads who have arranged a meal out, reminded people about equipment and making sure administration is done in time. They now need to transfer that leadership onto the pitch in ensuring young players are looked after and included.
We’ve recently seen first team papers signed by another one of our group. This is again testament to the club’s policy on providing opportunities within. This reward was earnt by attitude and application and being willing to take on challenges including playing in a new position. As I’ve said before, all players need more than one position if they are going to progress quickly and we keep seeing evidence of that as players are needed in gaps due to injuries and suspensions.
